About the Walking Challenge

In the age of 100-year life expectancy, extending healthy life expectancy has become a major social issue. In order to achieve this, it is essential to improve one’s health by improving one’s daily lifestyle.
The creation and establishment of a new culture of health are needed now more than ever.

In June 2018, under the philosophy of “creating physical and mental health for people and society from universities”, seven universities in Kyoto have come together to form an organization called “Healthy Campus Kyoto Network”. The Walking Challenge was launched as the core event of this organization, with the aim of promoting and establishing a culture of health among a wide range of people.

If 2,000 people walk 8,000 steps a day for 30 days, they will reach the Moon. The Walking Challenge “Walk to the MOON” started with this as a common goal. In 2022, we achieved reaching the Moon with about 4,000 participants. Therefore, for 2023, we aim to accomplish our goal with even more people participating, setting a new goal for 4,000 people to walk 8,000 steps a day for 30 days and make a round trip to the Moon.

From 2021, we will share the know-how cultivated by the Healthy Campus Kyoto Network and spread this movement throughout Japan through universities nationwide by co-sponsoring the event with the National Association of University Health Care Management and supporting it with the National Federation of University Co-operative Life Insurance Co-operatives.

Achieving 8,000 steps per day is difficult in ordinary life. The Walking Challenge provides a chance for many people to adopt healthy habits through various mechanisms, such as the chance to win prizes, participation with friends, and competition with other organizations. Let’s all have fun walking for a month and make a round trip to the Moon!
